A brand new, really nice venue in Albany for your special day.
“I am so happy you were a part of our wedding day at 90! You truly made the night perfect. All I wanted to see was everyone dancing and everyone was! At one moment, I sat and watched and it was amazing that almost every table was up and moving. You did a wonderful job and highly recommend you! I can’t thank you enough for helping us throw an awesome party! Sincerely – Mr and Mrs Lutz”
No the bride wasn’t 90 years old. These are some kind words from a bride whose wedding was my first DJ gig at a really nice venue called 90 State Events in Albany.
Here are some things I took interest in, when doing a gig at The 90 State Events reception hall that I thought I would share with you, in case you are looking for a good place for a wedding in the Albany area.
THE LOOK – With 4,000 square feet of beautiful architecture and fancy 50 foot ceilings, at The 90, brides can accommodate over a 400 guest list!
THE SOUND – The acoustics are surprisingly good for a place built with so much stome! Unlike some other restored banks, this reception venue has a great sound without that gym-like echo, due to noise reduction padding and also a state of the art sound system for your cocktail hour on the mezzanine.
THE FOOD – I had a bit of pulled pork nachos as an appetizer, and some bacon-wrapped sirloin for an entree that couldn’t be beat. The 90’s on-site food service is Mazzone Catering, on of my favorites, who already has been providing the Capital District with over 30 years of experience delivering flawless weddings in Albany.
THE SPACE – As I mentioned before, the cocktail hour is above the head table and the dance floor seen in the picture on the mezzanine. There is also a room up there to hideaway the bridal party, as well as another in the back corner of the main floor. Another neat little party room place is the old-style vault, which is decorated in a must-see style you will love.
THE PARKING – I will admit, it is not easy, as no place downtown really is in Albany, but The 90 does provide valet parking to help out in this department.

ENCOURAGING UGLY SWEATERS AT YOUR CHRISTMAS WEDDING
Yes. While some people cherish the formal tux and gown wedding, others dare to be different. That’s right… The Ugly Sweater Wedding…
If you are looking for something different than the typical tuxedo wedding, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” …for ugly sweaters. What could make your alternative Christmas wedding better than a a bunch of friends gathering in bad Bill Cosby-like knit tops?
The Ugly Sweater
I recently had an Ugly Sweater wedding to DJ for, and found that it was one of the most fun ones I ever serviced because of the attire alone. People searched high and low for their knitted outfits and it was like a fashion show of foolishness.
This helped everyone unwind and loosen up quick and made them READY TO PARTY from the get-go.
HOW TO PLAN UGLY SWEATER WEDDING
1) CREATE EASY PLANNING – Selecting a theme makes your wedding chapter write itself. A Christmas wedding theme brings all the details together and makes planning easy. Starting from invitations, to the cake, to the centerpieces and even onto the music, everything will fall together in the spirit of the Christmas season. And if you want it to be a night to remember – add sweaters.
2) DRESS CODE – Right in your invitations, tell people this is what you want. Let them know to shop for your sweaters early. If you hit the thrift shops in December, you will be too late. Start looking and have guests look in July! (I recently tried to find one the first week in December, and every thriftstore in the area had two or three college kids and office party hopefuls looking for the same things right next to me. Slim pickings!)
3) KEEP THE BRIDE LOOK – Brides, one thing to keep in mind, the bride should still look like a bride for picture reasons, but also opt for epic yarn sweetness as an accessory.
ADDING ANTIQUE ARTIFACTS LIKE DOORS & WINDOWS TO YOUR WEDDING
Here is a new trend for the very popular rustic wedding enthusiast. What many people are doing is slightly restoring a piece of architecture for decorative purposes at their wedding.
The rustic theme was very popular this year and I saw some similar ideas at all of them.
Two weeks in a row, I was the DJ for a rustic-style weddings. The first wedding was at the Apel Inn in Altamont. The other wedding was at Revolution Hall of Browns Brewery in Troy, NY.
One continuing decoration trend I am seeing this year is the small sections of wood as the centerpiece and both of these rustic weddings had this. It is funny though, because these particular weddings also both had pieces of old home construction being used as decorations for their place carding.
The only difference is one wedding had a door, while the other had a window. Here are some pictures that I took so you could get an idea on how to do something similar. Thanks for looking!

How about a “Smores Bar” with an open flame for your wedding?
ROAST YOUR OWN SMORE INSIDE AT YOUR WEDDING!
Bottom line: This is a sweet idea.
Want that campground feel at your wedding, without the mess?
here is a really cool idea I saw recently at a wedding out in the Saratoga region. Being a wedding DJ, we see some really cool stuff sometimes. This is the first time that I saw this nifty and fun idea for dessert.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SMORES BAR
1) GET BASKETS. Fill them with Marshmallows, Hershey bars, Graham Crackers, Graham Cracker bits for dipping, and even Reeses Peanut butter Cups.
2) ADD SKEWERS. Find the same kind of skewers that people use for shish kabobs at your local grocery store. Put them in a nice glass, or container that compliments your theme.
3) PROVIDE FLAME STATION. Do not build a campfire. What these crafty people did was got a long basket, filled it with stones and added a three open-flame “dish warmers” that caterers often use to put underneath serving dishes.
ENJOY THESE PICTURES & ENJOY YOUR SMORES BAR!

USING LOG SECTIONS TO LINE YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY WALKWAY
Here is a neat idea! For this recent rustic wedding in Glenville, NY, I saw something I hadn’t seen before. What the couple did for their reception was to use thin sections of wood for the centerpiece. The centerpiece idea had been done on many weddings I have been the DJ for, however, this couple decided to use larger sections of wood to accentuate their ceremony.
On top of each tree quarter section, they added an interesting candle holder with a ribbon bottom. The candle itself was sitting in stones.
This can really be an interesting add for a the simple rustic wedding minimalist.
